An Army of Yoginis

December 5, 2011

I intend to be a Bodhisattva-Yogini.

In Tibetan Buddhism, a Bodhisattva is anyone who is motivated by compassion and seeks enlightenment for themselves and for all beings.  These bodhisattvas take a vow to reincarnate, over and over, until all being are enlightened.  A lofty goal to be sure, however, it makes me feel like standing on my tippy toes and reaching as high as I can to even think of it.

In fact, I aspire to create a whole army of Business Bodhisattvas (aka: Business Yoginis) – women who are committed to becoming living expressions of their intrinsic worth so they can powerfully and confidently serve the people around them, leading to natural success.

Endless ripples of business yogini-bodhisattvas, waking up their families, their workplaces, their clients… the world – and succeeding while doing it.

It begins with a deep sense of service.

Asking the question, “How can I best help?”  Is the place to start.  Not the kind of help we give to others when we are looking for something in return or the kind of help that has an expectation attached.

I’m referring to that magical kind of service and assistance that we can provide after we’ve recognized our own intrinsic wholeness – after having given ourselves exactly what we need so we can support others in a super-clean way.  We allow others to have their own experience, and we help them see their own power, strength and beauty through our service.

Our yogini training expands when we look at life – and business – as a teacher.

Eleven years ago, when I stopped drinking and started cleaning up the mess of my life, I was desperately unhappy at work.  The climate was horrible, turnover was high, there was too much work for too few people and I had been elevated to a position that I didn’t really want and wasn’t really suited to.  I really wanted to get out, but it wasn’t time – my sober self knew that.

At that juncture, I wanted a different kind of life, and I came across a book that talked about Bodhisattvas.  I decided at that point to let work be my spiritual practice.  To notice all the ways that it got under my skin.  To notice my own habitual responses and reactions that were so far out of line with the kind of person I wanted to be.  And I learned.  And I softened.  And I changed.

When I had done what I could to learn what I needed to learn, I left.  It was clean.  My work environment and the people around me were great teachers.

“What is this here to teach me” makes us strong and flexible.

A mind open to learning helps us shed the layers that hide our inherent light.  Every irritation, every annoyance, every time you eat cake, spend money, or otherwise try and escape something uncomfortable – it’s the right time to learn a different way of showing up in the world.  The way that we are meant to show up.

We are always given the perfect opportunity to learn what we need to learn to be our most authentic, amazing selves in the world – even when we are wading in the shit, there is perfection – and abundant opportunity.

“What is this here to teach me” is powerful beyond measure – tempering us, burning off that which is no longer necessary, and helping us shine in the ways that only we can shine.

We make our intentions as powerful yogini-warriors tangible through action.

Intentional, mindful action is a natural result of the bodhisattva-yogini way of thinking. Grounded in the strength and clarity of our intrinsic worth and value, with a generous heart that is ready to serve, fused with an open-mind that is ready to learn, our energy can be harnessed in a very focused way.

“What is the next action for me to take?”  Consistent action, informed by service and learning, is action that will take us where we want to go and serve those around us.  This is the essence of the Way of the Business Yogini – we are waking up through learning, we are serving others, we are taking action  – over and over again.

With more natural brilliance, each and every time.

Step into your natural power.  Serve in deep and authentic ways.  Keep learning and unveil your brilliance, layer by layer. Take the next right action, over, and over again.  You stand together with many – there is an army of us with you, committed to awakening.

Namasté to you, business yoginis!
