Ask the Business Yogini: “Why do business & technology freak me out?”

December 1, 2010

Technology overwhelmDear Business Yogini,

What it is about this tech and business stuff that triggers our (my) latent — well— everything???? I swear I am not such a wimp in the rest of my life! Thanks so much!

Dearest Anonymous,

First, I would like to extend some virtual hugs and a hot beverage of your choice to you, wherever you may be. You are certainly not alone in this feeling of cranky overwhelm related to technology and business strategy and systems.

This response can be due to a number of things.

Sometimes it is simply the fact that learning new skills is hard.

There is a sense of vulnerability in learning new skills that most adults simply dislike. Especially if it’s not a topic that they are inherently interested in.

But sometimes, the response feels out of proportion to the stimulus.

In those cases, it might be something deeper. A call from the Universe to let our business show us the way to deeper healing.

Many people who are called to heal and help others have experienced some sort of challenge, or trauma in their lives. They have experienced serious illness, pain, alcoholism, incest or rape, car crashes, dysfunctional relationships — SOMETHING traumatic in their past. That something becomes a large part of why they are doing the work they are doing in the world: energy work, coaching, yoga teaching, nutrition counseling, body work, therapy, etc.

It is often the case that when we experience trauma and heal ourselves, it becomes the basis of our passion to live authentically and to help others heal as a result.  That has certainly been true for me.

However, sometimes when people who have tremendous gifts of creativity, empathy, and oodles of right-brained mojo, approach their business — or technology — or ANYTHING that makes them feel uncertain, trapped, or out of control, on some level it triggers a similar emotional response to the original challenging/traumatic situation.

There has been so much healing, but our business is asking us to go deeper.

The not-knowing how to proceed, not understanding what is coming next, and moving into unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory leaves some people feeling trapped and helpless which sets off a fight or flight response and triggers a strong, habitual emotional response, which can leave people feeling confused and baffled by their reaction.  However, it’s simply a call to bring all of your healing strategies to bear on your relationship to your business.

This is not true of everyone, of course, but it might be something to consider.

No matter what it is, no matter the reason WHY technology and business trigger our latent –well — everything, it’s worthy of our compassion coupled with some deep breaths, and maybe some assistance from the business yogini herself.

Namasté to you, business yoginis!

“There has been so much healing but our business is asking us to go deeper.”
Now that is a powerful statement. The opportunity to go deeper rests in every little thing we do, even our businesses.
I miss you, Nona. I love seeing your wisdom in my inbox.
