One Task Tuesday- Have a Blog Brainstorm

July 27, 2010

Are there things you *know* you could do to get organized, build your business, or take care of yourself?

Are there tasks that have languished on your to-do-list for who-knows-how-long?

Each Tuesday is a chance to get a long-standing item off of your to-do list, OR take on the task that I suggest. The tasks that I suggest will be simple, proactive tasks you can do to optimize your online presence, connect with your people, get organized, love your business, or nourish yourself so you can be at your absolute best.

Have you ever panicked and thought to yourself, “I have nothing to say on my blog.”

Yep, me too.  And so has every other blogger I’ve ever talked to.  It’s totally normal to have deer-in-the-headlight moments.  But they can be minimized.

First, may I suggest you set yourself a blog schedule?  Be it once a week or once per month, pick a day of the week or month and commit to writing a new post at least that often.  The more consistent you are with your blog posts, the better it is for your rankings on google, but more important than that, it sets up a positive expectation with your readers.

Ack! Having a schedule means you have to have something to write about.

This is where lots of folks freeze up.  They sit down to write and they can’t think of a thing.  Not. One. Thing. To. Say.

My experience is that most people have tons of brilliant ideas for blog posts when they aren’t sitting down to write.  I have certainly noticed that in myself, and when I talk to my clients, I hear the same thing.  “Ooh, I want to write about this, and this, and definitely this…”  For whatever reason, it’s easy to forget all of our brilliant ideas when faced with a blank page and the prospect of others reading what we have to say.

Take 5 – 10 minutes, right now and brainstorm a list of topics for your blog.

Get specific.  You may have a few overarching topics and lots of sub-topics underneath those.  I like to keep a list of blog topics tucked into my to-do lists, on a 3×5 card.

If your mind goes blank right now, that’s okay.  The next time you find yourself full of lots of blog topic ideas, pull out a sheet of paper (or a 3×5 card), or open up your electronic to-do list, and brainstorm away.  I find that at least a few times a month, I have a cascade of blog ideas come up and I write all of them down.

Knowing that I have a list of blog topics available to me somehow makes the creative ideas flow more easily on my blog post days and I often find that a completely new and fresh idea pops up that is completely independent of my list ‘o topics.

Happy blog brainstorming!!

What great advice. Also, yesterday on WordPress I found a site, Plinky.com, that feeds you questions to think and blog about. So, when all else fails you can write about how you feel about the death penalty or whatever question pops up on the day of you writer’s block.
