Week 4 of the Slow Down Diet: Living in Rhythm

May 22, 2010

“Master rhythm and you master metabolism.” –Marc David

Week four is primarily focused on tuning into rhythms. Not only of our bodies but also of the world around us — it’s a fascinating addition and one I’d not ever really thought about. But first let’s talk a bit about week three — awareness.

Notes from Week Three

To be honest, week three was sort of a failure.  Bringing awareness to the table is hard — especially because I had an incredibly busy week.  This is not an excuse (well, yes it is) but I probably only brought awareness to eating one third of my meals.

Now that’s out of the way, I did focus on breathing and eating more slowly — so I was able to stay focused on that, at least.

I was also able to keep in mind the concept of “eating to the point of energy”, which is powerful and works wonders for eating just the right amount of food.

What I found curious was that I convinced myself that if I’m busy I don’t have time to pay attention to what I’m eating, even though I’m eating more slowly and breathing during my meals.  I don’t really know what’s behind that — yet — but I’m ready to figure it out.  This week my schedule is more sane, so I am going to focus not only on awareness, but also on week four’s focus: rhythm.

Capitalizing on Rhythm

“Do I have a rhythm?” -Marc David

In this chapter, Marc David sheds light on creating a rhythm.  Following the natural rhythms of the day and also listening to the natural rhythms of our bodies.  My natural inclination was to sort of blow this off, to be honest.  But after reading the chapter a number of times, I am ready to work on this, because as I reflected on my own life, it became pretty clear that my days don’t have as much rhythm as I would like and, just maybe this is contributing to the imbalances in my body.

Again, each chapter has so much information!  The main elements of focusing on rhythm, according to Marc David are, eating the largest meal when the sun is at it’s highest point, eating regularly, cutting back on caffeine to re-connect with your natural rhythms, and getting enough rest.

That’s a lot to focus on, isn’t it?

This week, I am going to plan my schedule so it’s more rhythmic — I will eat at the same time each day, as much as I possibly can, with my largest meal at lunch.  Fortunately for me, I stopped drinking coffee a few weeks ago, which has already increased my awareness of needing to sleep as well as helped me get in touch with my natural cycles of energy.

And, oh, three weeks in, I still have yet to lose any weight.  But I feel great.  And that is feeling more like the point each day.

So this week, I will continue to eat whole, clean foods, continue to eat slowly, work to incorporate greater awareness into my meals and develop a more regular rhythm into my days.

@Billie: I couldn’t agree more about it being a process. But I think it is imperative to acknowledge our proclivity and natural desire for results right now. I am not immune to this, despite the fact that I recognize that this is a life-long process. Thanks for popping over and for the reminder. :D

@Hazel: I have the CD’s and I haven’t listened yet. With your recommendation, I will listen. :D

@Emily: Thank you so much!! I’m so happy that you are enjoying the series. I am very much enjoying my experience with it.

xoxo.
