One Task Tuesday — Have a great to-do list

May 4, 2010

Are there things you *know* you could do to get organized, build your business, or take care of yourself?

Are there tasks that have languished on your to-do-list for who-knows-how-long that give you nightmares (okay, maybe not nightmares…)?

Each Tuesday is a chance to get a long-standing item off of your to-do list, OR take on the task that I suggest. The tasks that I suggest will be simple, proactive tasks you can do to optimize your online presence, connect with your people, get organized, love your business, or nourish yourself so you can be at your absolute best.

Ready? Let’s do it!

I love my to-do lists. I keep them categorized, on 3×5 cards, ala the hipster PDA.  Truly the best decision I ever made in my life.  I love my 3×5 cards– I even created an eBook to help others create intuitive, heart-based business plans on 3×5 cards.  But I digress.  I want to talk about your to-do list.

Is your to-do list helping you as much as it can?

When you are working, do you have little mental reminders pop into your head…  “Oh, don’t forget to pick up the drycleaning.” “Oh, crap, I have to make cupcakes….” or, “Mmmm, I need to remember to call so-and-so about the thingamajig.”

If you have any mental reminders that are distracting you from your work, your to-do list is lacking.

For today’s task, I encourage you make a master list of every to-do, no matter how big or small (inspired by David Allen’s brilliance).

  • Organize your lists around relevant categories (enough, but not too many): for instance, each work or home project should have it’s own card, each child, grocery lists for different stores, errands, someday (a list of things you want to do someday), calls/emails to make, waiting for (stuff you are waiting on others to finish up), and delegate (especially good if you have a VA or staff)
  • Do a mind sweep.  Fill up those cards.  No matter how small the task, get it out of your mind and onto a list.  Maybe new categories will pop up while you do this — great!  Just get everything out of your head.

By getting everything out of your head and onto a list, you will be giving your mind a chance to focus on what is actually in front of you.  You are creating “turtle step” action plans for each project by writing out the steps that you need to take to complete each project, which, you will find, helps you accomplish more in less time.  And best of all, your mind can relax.

By creating a trusted system (meaning, one you refer to and update often) to keep your to-do lists, you are freeing up your energy and focus to actually shine your light in the world.

    *Bonus Task for this Week*

If you are feeling REALLY motivated this week, you can create an intuitive, dynamic, business plan with the guide I wrote — put it on 3×5 cards, and stick them in with your to-do lists.  You will have to-do lists that help keep you relaxed and focused AND a business plan that you will see when you look at your to-do lists (often!), and this translates into a business plan that inspires the actions you take on any given day!
