Equanimity is one of those words that I fell in love with when I first began studying meditation. I felt a deep longing to embody this incredible word — my desire to experience this state drove my meditation practice for many years. In many ways, I think it still does.
The meaning of equanimity is a steadiness of mind under stress. Being the mom of a five year old, moving every 2 – 3 years, running a business, entertaining for my husband’s job, living in a country where I still can’t understand everything that is happening around me… Wow, yes, I want to live in a state of equanimity as often as possible!
The beautiful thing about aspiring for equanimity is that it drives me to let go of old, outdated, beliefs and habits. It keeps me coming back to my meditation cushion and my yoga mat on a daily basis. It presses me to keep my own energy clean and fresh through self-coaching and working with other coaches. It constantly informs me that every circumstance in my life is a teacher – an experience that can help me grow.
All of these practices, habits, and ways of thinking are the foundation of true success in life.
As a business owner, aspiring business owner, professional, mom, volunteer — whatever activities define your sense of who you are in the world– striving for equanimity can help you be at your absolute best.
Equanimity is about having a calm mind, a peaceful heart, and full presence – no matter what is happening around you. Can you feel how powerful that would be in your own life? What would it feel like and look like in your life if you were to embody equanimity?
